I study the ways that microorganisms catalyze the movement of elements through aquatic ecosystems. Most of my research focuses on linking specific microorganisms to transformations of nitrogen, phosphorus, and carbon. Much of this work centers on marine ecosystems and the interdisciplinary nature of oceanography.

My group has spent considerable time examining the microorganisms driving nitrogen cycling in the ocean, including studies of spatial and temporal variation in organisms involved in N₂ fixation, nitrification, and nitrogen assimilation.

I am a Professor at the University of Montana, based at the Flathead Lake Biological Station.
