2026 OBVI Workshop

About

The OBVI SUBSEA (Ocean Biogeochemistry Virtual Institute Subtropical Underwater Biogeochemistry and Subsurface Export Alliance) project is pleased to offer a 2-week workshop focused on ocean carbon export and marine biogeochemistry. The workshop is open to early-career researchers affiliated with OBVI projects.

Workshop dates: December 2 - December 11, 2026

This workshop will introduce participants to the science of ocean carbon export and its importance in the global climate system. Through lectures, discussions, and hands-on analyses, participants will explore the biological, chemical, and physical processes that drive the transfer of carbon from the surface ocean to the deep sea.

Topics will include:

  • The biological carbon pump and particle export
  • Remineralization and carbon sequestration
  • Physical and biological controls on export pathways
  • Emerging observational tools and autonomous technologies
  • Modeling approaches for studying marine carbon cycling
  • Integration of shipboard, autonomous, and satellite observations

The workshop will feature:

  • Lectures from OBVI-affiliated scientists
  • Hands-on data analysis sessions using real oceanographic datasets
  • Tutorials on sediment traps, optical sensors, isotopes, imaging systems, and autonomous platforms
  • Introductory modeling exercises focused on biogeochemical and ecosystem export models
  • Lightning talks highlighting participant research
  • Group discussions centered on influential and emerging studies in ocean biogeochemistry
  • Networking opportunities for early-career researchers across OBVI projects

Workshop Objectives

Participants will:

  1. Gain familiarity with concepts, definitions, and methods used to estimate ocean carbon export
  2. Analyze shipboard, autonomous, and remote sensing datasets relevant to marine biogeochemistry
  3. Explore publicly available carbon export data products and observational resources
  4. Learn how satellite ocean color, altimetry, and related datasets can contextualize at-sea observations
  5. Build connections with other early-career researchers working across OBVI projects
