2026 OBVI Workshop
About
The OBVI SUBSEA (Ocean Biogeochemistry Virtual Institute Subtropical Underwater Biogeochemistry and Subsurface Export Alliance) project is pleased to offer a 2-week workshop focused on ocean carbon export and marine biogeochemistry. The workshop is open to early-career researchers affiliated with OBVI projects.
Workshop dates: December 2 - December 11, 2026
- Location: University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa
- Application deadline: 11:59 PM ET on Thursday, June 11, 2026

This workshop will introduce participants to the science of ocean carbon export and its importance in the global climate system. Through lectures, discussions, and hands-on analyses, participants will explore the biological, chemical, and physical processes that drive the transfer of carbon from the surface ocean to the deep sea.
Topics will include:
- The biological carbon pump and particle export
- Remineralization and carbon sequestration
- Physical and biological controls on export pathways
- Emerging observational tools and autonomous technologies
- Modeling approaches for studying marine carbon cycling
- Integration of shipboard, autonomous, and satellite observations
The workshop will feature:
- Lectures from OBVI-affiliated scientists
- Hands-on data analysis sessions using real oceanographic datasets
- Tutorials on sediment traps, optical sensors, isotopes, imaging systems, and autonomous platforms
- Introductory modeling exercises focused on biogeochemical and ecosystem export models
- Lightning talks highlighting participant research
- Group discussions centered on influential and emerging studies in ocean biogeochemistry
- Networking opportunities for early-career researchers across OBVI projects
Workshop Objectives
Participants will:
- Gain familiarity with concepts, definitions, and methods used to estimate ocean carbon export
- Analyze shipboard, autonomous, and remote sensing datasets relevant to marine biogeochemistry
- Explore publicly available carbon export data products and observational resources
- Learn how satellite ocean color, altimetry, and related datasets can contextualize at-sea observations
- Build connections with other early-career researchers working across OBVI projects
Schedule
The workshop schedule is currently being finalized and will be added to this page once available. Please check back soon for updates.
